One on One Time
Making time for regular one-on-one (1:1) check-ins with your team is absolutely essential. 1:1s allow you to gain an understanding how the team are doing with their work and making sure everything stays on course. These uninterrupted sessions provide a dedicated space where you can talk about what’s currently happening and pinpoint where support might be needed.
1:1s help you stay in the loop about anything that might come up later, giving you the chance to coach, guide, and readjust as necessary. Plus, these meetings offer a chance to connect with your team members on a deeper level, understanding what’s on their minds and how it might impact their work.
Regular 1:1s keep you informed and prepared, so you’re not caught off guard and ready to adapt to any changes that come your way.
- Set a Regular Schedule: Establish a consistent cadence for one-on-one meetings with each team member, whether it’s weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. This consistency helps build trust and ensures that important topics are consistently addressed.
- Create a Safe and Open Environment: Foster an atmosphere where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, concerns, and ideas openly. Actively listen to their feedback, validate their perspectives, and demonstrate empathy to build a strong rapport.
- Focus on Development and Growth: Use one-on-one meetings as opportunities to discuss career aspirations, professional development goals, and areas for growth. Provide constructive feedback, offer support and resources, and identify opportunities for skill enhancement or advancement within the team or business.
- Agenda Setting: Encourage team members to come prepared with topics they want to discuss during the meeting. Additionally, create your own agenda to cover important updates, project progress, goal alignment, and any challenges or roadblocks they may be facing.
- Follow-Up and Accountability: Find a mechanism to document key takeaways, action items, and commitments made during the meeting, and follow up on progress and outcomes in subsequent meetings. Holding team members accountable for their commitments (and yours) helps drive accountability and ensures that goals are being met effectively.
